YVP swans

Post by lydia rose »

4 cygnets alone on Top Lodge. 1 adult, possibly now lone, patrolling grassy bank of Big lodge as both big lodge adults confronting it. The 2 small big lodge cygnets keeping together well away. Any one know what's happened?

2 Gt. Crested Grebe young still on big lodge with parents.

It's very much a case of swan wars, Lydia. The two adults on Top Lodge are the original pair known as Billy and Esma and they have 4 cygnets. The two adults on Big Lodge are known as Charlie and Lottie and have two cygnets, which are younger than the 4 on Top Lodge. Billy needs to get his 4 onto Big Lodge so they can learn to fly, but Charlie won't have it. A battle ensues between Charlie and Billy every time he tries and Charlie usually wins. Billy's mate, Esma, seems to be impressed with Charlie's prowess and has been seen consorting with Charlie. It could of course be Esma using female wiles to get her cygnets onto Big Lodge. Whatever the case, Billy always seems to be the loser, so if there's a swan missing, it could be Billy, gone off in a sulk!
