I imagine that most of us have heard of the latest moorland fire, this time on Darwen Moor, and once again started by a disposable barbecue. A petition has been set up to campaign for the banning of disposable barbecues on moorland etc. If you are in agreement with such a ban, please could you sign the petition at the following link:-

Re: Moorland Fires
Feedback from Stephen Martin on the effects of the fire:-
"The losses on Darwen Moor of breeding raptors, waders, gamebirds & passerines has been horrendous…and heart wrenching to witness the pitiful cries of adult Golden Plover & Curlew as the fires engulfed their brood."

Re: Moorland Fires
Very concerning given this is entirely avoidable, probably likely to be a regular occurrence if something is not done about it and that these habitats are very fragile. Of course they will "bounce back" given time but will they ever be the same?
The impact on birds we have heard from Steve -but don't forget the reptile, amphibian, insect/invertebrate populations plus of course plants, mosses etc. Sundews and lizards can't just fly back in.
