Information on shelduck has been gathered over a number of years through ringing and colour ringing many shelduck congregation around the Heligoland peninsula to moult before returning to the UK. One of my favorite wildfowl to ring. Cracking birds in the hand

Last year at Leighton Moss (Morecambe Hide) saw a Shelduck kill an Avocet chick. The Avocet parents were not very attentive, their chicks swimming away, a Shelduck swam over and killed one then swam off leaving the dead chick bobbing in the water.
