Long-billed Dowitcher & Purple Heron

Post by Leonard Poxon »

On Saturday morning (18.01.20) I visited Marshide to see the Dowitcher. Due to heavy rain flooding the marsh it was not as close as it had been previously, however it was actively feeding and close enough for some good photographs.

Following this I visited Eagland Hill to view the Purple Heron. I got some long distance views, but by the time I moved further along the road to get closer the bird had settled in a ditch and only its head could be distantly seen. I waited an hour and a quarter but it did not emerge. It did emerge 3/4 hour after I had left, but that's birding for you. In compensation I saw plenty other birds including singing Corn Buntings, Yellowhammer, Reed Bunting, Wren, Skylark, Pied Wagtail, Kestrel, Buzzard, Barn Owl, Little Owl, Pink-footed Geese, Redwing and a Brown Hare disturbed by a shooting party.
