Success! Unqualified success! Having instigated the installation of a tern raft on Big Lodge at Yarrow Valley Park on the basis of a hunch, it was gratifying to see the arrival of a pair of Common Terns in the first season. It was even more gratifying when they stayed to breed, and produced two chicks. Both chicks have now successfully fledged and have left the site for their migration to their wintering grounds. Let’s wish them ‘Bon voyage’ and hope that they and their parents return to the site next Spring.
As stated in the Winter Newsletter, the Society received a grant for the work from the Green Partnership Awards scheme, and three committee members attended a presentation of the awards at County Hall in June.
There has been a suggestion in Committee that members with Internet access might prefer to receive the Newsletter electronically rather than in its current form. Some of the advantages of this are that it saves paper, photographs can be in colour and it is easier to distribute. Please let us know if you would like to receive it this way, but worry not, it will continue to be available in paper format, if you don’t.
