BIRD RACE
Despite the Foot and Mouth restrictions - or possibly even because of them - the annual 24 hour bird race took place as usual. After much deliberation, the race was held on the weekend of the 28th & 29th April.
It was held because the number of records being received had fallen off dramatically, Three teams took part and, despite many sites being completely out of bounds, a total of 96 species were recorded. This probably wasn't very many less than it would have been without restriction. There is perhaps a lesson in there to be learnt for future years.
Amazingly, all three teams scored 80. The highlights included Barn Owl, Short-eared Owl, Golden Plover and Lesser Whitethroat. The exotic was represented by Ring-necked Parakeet.
Thanks are due to Nora and Tommy West for hosting the 'who's best' after the race.
